Lots of Lovely: Lace

Perhaps it’s all the Valentine’s Day romance in the air, but I’ve really been gravitating toward lace lately.  Today I’m wearing a lace blazer to work and I feel like I should take a moment to enjoy some afternoon tea or some other Victorian lady activity. Isn’t it funny how an outfit can affect your mood? Even if it’s on a casual piece like a crop top or maxi dress, the delicate embellishment adds some sophistication and oomph to any ensemble. Today’s lace is not your grandmother’s–it’s everywhere now, especially in bright colors, and I suspect it’s not going anywhere for spring. For this Lots of Lovely collection I gravitated toward more neutral tones for a soft, dreamy feel with a cool modern edge. I don’t know about you, but those Anthropologie shorts are going on my wish list ASAP. Enjoy!

New Orleans

Last week I took a business trip to New Orleans. I’d been there before, and the thing I was looking forward to the most was definitely the food. I remember even the street hot dogs tasting like heaven, so the thought of trying out some new restaurants was pretty exciting. Here are some of the dishes I ate and places I visited:

I liked Port of Call because it was away from the hustle and bustle of the French Quarter, and it looked like a place locals frequented for burgers.

Lots of Lovely: Black and White

This week I was watching the Golden Globes when I was inspired by Zosia Memet to create my next Lots of Lovely collection. Aside from her amazing new haircut, which I think looks great on her, her Reem Acra gown really stood out to me for its classic look. Black and white is simultaneously timeless and modern, and I think it’s always a good answer to the “What should I wear?” conundrum we all face from time to time.

10 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Incredibly Happy

Some food for thought to go with my morning cup of coffee. I’ve decided to take a class with my girlfriends so we can see each other on a regular basis and do a fun activity together. I think that’s something you take for granted when you’re in college. After graduation, friends disperse all over the world, and life just gets busier. But, I truly believe positive friendships are worth cultivating, and that means putting in the time and effort to see them. Let the social time begin!

It’s easy to think of happiness as a result, but happiness is also a driver.

One example: While I’m definitely into finding ways to improve personal productivity (whether a one-day burstor a lifetime, or things you should not do every day), probably the best way to be more productive is to just be happier. Happy people accomplish more.

Easier said than done though, right?

Actually, many changes are easy. Here are 10 science-based ways to be happier from Belle Beth Cooper, Content Crafter at Buffer, the social media management tool that lets you schedule, automate, and analyze social media updates.

Lots of Lovely: Radiant Orchid

I’ve decided to add a new section to voila lovely! dedicated to collections of great finds. The “Lots of Lovely” roundup will focus on a new theme each week based on current trends or whatever is out there that I really like. The first post of its kind is inspired by Pantone’s color of 2014, which is radiant orchid. This purple/pink hue is supposed to inspire innovation and encourage creativity, so maybe some of these gorgeous must-haves will spark your next great idea.

Voila! Personalized Chair Signs

Throughout the wedding-planning process, I really tapped into my inner DIY abilities and looked into several wedding blogs for inspiration. One trend that I really liked were the chair signs for the couple to hang on their seats. There were many cute and silly variations (Mr. and Mrs., His Wife and Her Husband, Ball and Chain), but the pairing that stood out to me was Señor and Señora. Since we had an untraditional wedding, it was a nice nod to my culture in an unexpected way. Like many items that have the word “wedding” in front of it, the ones I found were a bit pricey, so I took a hands-on approach and made them myself.

The cool thing about this is that it can work for many events where there’s a guest of honor you want to make feel special. “Future Mommy” or “Future Grandma” can work at a baby shower, “The Graduate” for a graduating student, “Birthday Boy” for a birthday party, etc. Plus, when people go up to the guest of honor, it’s a playful pop that people will inevitably see (and point out!) and will make the event a bit more special.

Here’s how I made them:

We All Scream

When my husband and I received our Minted.com thank you cards, we divided up the recipient list to share the labor and tackle our final wedding “to-do” faster. My half was mailed out last week, while his stack was still in our living room, taunting me with its defiant presence. I knew I had to provide my husband with some extra incentive to get them done; otherwise our guests would probably not get them until our anniversary. So I bribed him.

A New Spin on Things

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind of important events for me, and now I am adjusting to a new life as a married woman. It really hit me this weekend—after the wedding, after coming back from our honeymoon—as I was driving to the grocery store. I was going to by some items to make a couple salads for a potluck we were invited to and also some of my husband’s favorites, which just seemed so “wifey” of me. It’s really been fun so far, especially today when we spent our afternoon tackling our respective home projects. Sharing a one bedroom apartment is tricky when two people merge all of their things, but I’m proud of the creative ways we’ve used our space.

One of the many benefits of being newlyweds is getting to use our newly acquired kitchen gadgets, so I wanted to share the different ways we’ve used them. One of the dishes we brought to the potluck was a spinach and strawberry salad, which gave me the perfect excuse to break out our salad spinner! The results were both fun and delicious!

First I placed washed spinach leaves into the salad spinner bowl.  Image
